During the debate on strengthening rural areas in the EU through cohesion policy, Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI), an independent member of the European Parliament, said that, as a member of the two committees for transport and tourism and for agriculture and rural development, that in the year since he has been speaking in these committees, nothing has been resolved, leaving him feeling powerless.
Below is the full text of the statement made by Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI), an independent member of the European Parliament:
„Madam President, I would like to begin this speech by asking a question that I consider to be extremely fundamental. How often do we, here in this Parliament, really shape reality when we speak? Because I feel, as a member of the two committees, for transport and tourism and for agriculture and rural development, that in almost a year since I have been speaking in these committees, I have not achieved anything. And I feel powerless, and I don’t like it.
Because Romania, folks, if you are aware, is the country with the largest deficit in the European Union and, as such, those who have led it until now and who continue to lead it, although not necessarily voted for by the people, want to resolve this deficit through VAT increases, through fuel excise duty increases, which will destroy rural tourism.
At the same time, we have not managed to build motorways for 17 years. Why is that? Maybe we will succeed now with military mobility. And these things go on and on, and we get nowhere. Basically, what cohesion policy are we talking about? How will this cohesion policy work in a country with a deficit that is unable to solve its problems? Will this money really reach the people at home, there in rural areas, where there are not even roads or where there are so many problems?
