The natural increase of the Romanian population remained negative in June this year, at a minus of 6,916 people, with the number of deaths being 1.6 times higher than that of live births, according to provisional data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
According to the official statistics, the number of birth certificates issued for live births was by 223 lower (-1.9%), while the number of death certificates decreased by 166 (-0.9%), and that for children under one year of age who died decreased by 31, in June 2025 compared to June 2024.
Overall, the natural increase was negative both in June 2025 (-6,916 people) and in June 2024 (-6,859 people).
A number of 9,175 people died in urban areas (4,662 men and 4,513 women), and 9,499 people died in rural areas (4,972 men and 4,527 women), during the reference period.
Compared to the same month in 2024, the number of registered deaths decreased by 3.5% in urban areas (-6% for men and -0.6% for women) and increased by 1.7% in rural areas (+1.9% for men and +1.6% for women).
According to the same source, 9,628 marriages were registered at civil status offices in June 2025.
On the other hand, the number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the consent of the spouses (administratively or through notarial procedure) stood at 1,172.
