PM Bolojan says Romania can regain its credibility by observing commitments and keeping decision consistency

Published on

Observance of commitments and decision consistency are the only ways Romania can regain its credibility and predictability in the long term, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said in a recent interview for Bloomberg. The government posted on Sunday on its Facebook page a clip from the said interview, where Bolojan talks about trust and mutual respect between partners, showing that failure to respect agreements causes external partners to be somehow circumspect about Romania.

„If you notified the European Commission that next year you will have a certain deficit, the Commission relied on your estimate, yet next year’s deficit was much higher. The first time it said ‘There was a miscalculation.’ The next year, you announced a new deficit and overshot it again. After two or three such instances, you are viewed with a certain circumspection, with certain reservations, and in order to restore trust, to raise your rating – also as a country, means to provide predictability, it means that if you know certain things cannot be done, you should straightforwardly tell them ‘We cannot do this, that’s all we can accomplish and here are the reasons why’,” said Bolojan stressing that wiggling away from responsibility in keeping commitments is not acceptable. „I think the attitude is very important. Respecting agreements is top important, consistency in decisions, as is a dialogue that respects the partner and generates trust and predictability in the long term,” he concluded.
