AUR requests parliamentary commission of inquiry into cancellation of 2024 presidential elections

Published on

The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), together with the Young People’s Party (POT), announce the initiation of a parliamentary initiative to establish an inquiry commission into the annulment of the 2024 presidential elections.

AUR and POT parliamentarians stated that they would submit all the initiatives to establish this commission, as it represents an essential instrument for defending constitutional democracy and the rule of law, against abuses and manipulations of the political and institutional system.

„Following the first round of the 2024 presidential elections, there was a clear winner: Mr. Calin Georgescu, supported by a large majority of the electorate. All data, including independent polls and the dynamics surrounding the campaign, indicated that he would win the second round as well. Months have passed since the Romanians’ vote was annulled by the nine judges of the Constitutional Court, without a clear explanation to this day. The system’s parties and Nicusor Dan promised to clarify this abuse, to declassify the documents that were the basis for this decision, but no steps have been taken. What is obvious to the overwhelming majority of Romanian citizens is that the annulment of the elections pursued a clear political goal: preventing access to the highest state office of a candidate who was inconvenient for the system,” reads an AUR press release.

According to AUR representatives, „Romanians have the right to know why their vote was annulled and who bears responsibility for this abuse that seriously affects democracy.”

„In fact, international reports, including that of the U.S. State Department on the human rights situation, have explicitly mentioned the cancellation of the elections as a major democratic vulnerability. The Romanian Parliament has a democratic obligation to clarify the circumstances of the cancellation of the 2024 presidential elections. The parliamentary commission will have the mission to objectively and completely investigate the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the elections and to establish political and institutional responsibilities. In addition, the commission will hear representatives of the institutions involved in organizing the elections and other structures with direct responsibilities, so that Romanians have the answers they expect. At the end of the activity, the commission will draw up a report in which it will assess the effects of the cancellation on the constitutional right of citizens to vote and to be elected. The report will include proposals for legislative, administrative or disciplinary measures, but also notifications to the competent institutions, where appropriate. AUR will use all parliamentary levers to bring the truth to light and to defend the fundamental right of Romanians to decide by vote”, AUR informs. AGERPRES
