Defence minister Ionut Mosteanu had a meeting with Marcos Perestrello, president of the NATO Parliamentary Council, on the sidelines of the Warsaw Security Forum, on Monday, on which occasion they discussed the importance of consultations in the allied format, as well as the launch of Eastern Sentry, an initiative aimed at strengthening the security of the allied space from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Defence sent to AGERPRES, the Romanian official emphasised our country’s constant efforts to strengthen defence, including on the legal dimension, and also mentioning the completion of the legal and procedural framework for dealing with drones and piloted military aircraft that violate national airspace.

At the same time, the two high officials welcomes the decisions adopted by allied leaders at the NATO Summit in The Hague, in June 2025, through which member states committed to increase their defence spending to 5% of GDP.

During the discussions, the minister of defence reaffirmed Romania’s firm support for Ukraine, facing Russian aggression, as well as for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, the same source shows.

In this context, he appreciated the result of the recent parliamentary elections in Chisinau as a confirmation of the European orientation of this country and underscored the importance of support for strengthening resilience and defence capabilities, essential for regional and European security.

The Romanian official also highlighted Romania’s essential role in the Black Sea region and our country’s substantial contribution to the consolidation of NATO’s Eastern Flank. He stressed the strategic importance of the region for the stability of the entire Euro-Atlantic space and specified that the Black Sea is constantly on the allied agenda, being a central point of discussions on European security, the Ministry of Defence shows.

At the same time, Mosteanu recalled that Romania has taken over, for the second semester of this year, the command of the MCM Black Sea – an initiative developed together with Bulgaria and Turkey.

The Minister of Defence emphasised the importance of the NATO Battle Group established in Cincu, led by France, to which other allied states also contribute, as well as the relevance of the „Dacian Fall 2025” exercise, which will take place this fall in Romania. He also specified that our country is actively involved in ensuring the security and stability of the Eastern Flank, through significant contributions both to the battle groups in Poland, Bulgaria and Slovakia, and to the air police missions carried out in the Baltic states, the same source mentions.
