Gov’t does not currently plan to increase taxes in 2026 (FinMin Nazare)

The Government does not plan, at this moment, a tax increase next year, Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare said on Wednesday after the approval by the Government of the budget rectification project.

„I have said it several times that at this moment we are not discussing a tax increase. We do not plan a VAT increase for 2026, not even in Horeca. Horeca is a special case. We are waiting for the analysis and based on it we will discuss in the Coalition and make a decision. And regarding the other taxes, on profit, on income, we do not plan, at this moment, a tax increase. And here I am referring to all taxes”, the finance minister said.

He explained that all the measures taken so far by the Government will have a significant impact in 2026.

„The cumulative effect of the packages is focused on 2026 because next year we must aim for a 6% deficit, so we have a very large adjustment to make. Therefore, it was a strategy for the fiscal measures packages to consider a significant adjustment that would support us in 2026 and get us as close as possible to 6%”.

The rectification approved by the Government provides for a deficit target of 8.4% for this year. AGERPRES
