Public administration debt (government debt) rose in June 2025 to 1,040.62 billion lei, from 1,034.71 billion lei in the previous month, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance (MF), consulted by AGERPRES.
As a percentage of GDP, government debt increased to 57.2%, from 56.8% in May (GDP according to the National Institute of Statistics release from 5 September 2025).
In June 2025, medium- and long-term debt increased to 976.366 billion lei, from 961.008 billion lei in May 2025, while short-term debt decreased to 64.26 billion lei, from 73.71 billion lei the previous month.
The largest portion of this debt, namely 856.53 billion lei, was in the form of government securities. Loans totalled 163.31 billion lei.
Debt denominated in the national currency stood at 486.82 billion lei, that in euros at the equivalent of 457.81 billion lei, and debt in US dollars amounted to the equivalent of 93.99 billion lei.
According to Ministry of Finance data, in June, central government debt rose to 1,016.59 billion lei, from 1,010.82 billion lei in May 2025, of which 952.35 billion lei was medium- and long-term debt. The bulk of the central government’s debt was contracted in lei (468.04 billion lei) and in euros (equivalent of 452.56 billion lei).
Local government debt increased to 24.035 billion lei, from 23.889 billion lei the previous month, of which 24.016 billion lei was medium- and long-term.
At the same time, in the sixth month of this year, domestic public debt stood at 522.958 billion lei (524.168 billion lei in May 2025), representing 28.7% of GDP (compared to 28.8% in the previous month), of which 504.070 billion lei was central government debt and 18.887 billion lei was local government debt.
According to the same source, external public debt amounted to 517.668 billion lei (510.55 billion lei in the previous month), or 28.4% of GDP (28% of GDP in May 2025), of which 512.52 billion lei was external debt of the central public administration and 5.147 billion lei was that of the local public administration.
