„There are opportunities for Romania, especially by hosting the Maritime Security Center,” explained Romanian MEP Mihai Tudose.

„We hope that the post-conflict reconstruction process in Ukraine will begin as soon as possible. Let’s be prepared to be part of the process, not just spectators or a transit country,” Mihai Tudose pointed out, according to Obiectiv Vocea Brăilei.

The European Commission has presented the EU’s new strategy for a secure, prosperous, and resilient Black Sea region. It is a framework for action in which Romania has already announced that it wants to play a major role, as stated by President Nicuşor Dan in the first press conference of his term, in which he said that he would request that our country host the European Maritime Security Center, provided for in the EU strategy.

MEP Mihai Tudose believes that the head of state reacted promptly to seize this opportunity.

„The strategy outlined by the European Commission is based on three pillars: security, growth, and resilience. Each pillar has a specific initiative: the creation of a maritime security center, the development of transport, energy, and digital networks, and the fight against climate change risks in coastal areas, including through the strengthening of civil protection.

These are opportunities for Romania, especially by hosting the Maritime Security Center. We have not only the advantage of expertise in the field, particularly for the Black Sea region, but also the argument that EU agencies are currently underrepresented in our country,” said Mihai Tudose.

The president of the PSD National Council stressed that „it is essential to unlock the potential of this area, which has been economically affected by the war in Ukraine. Romania can and must play a proactive role in connecting Europe with the Caucasus and Central Asia. And there is another plan that can work to our advantage: at some point, hopefully as soon as possible, the post-conflict reconstruction process in Ukraine will begin. Let’s be ready to be part of the process, not just spectators or a transit country,” said the Social Democrat MEP.

According to the European Commission, the Black Sea is an area of significant geostrategic importance, connecting Europe, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and the eastern Mediterranean.

The Black Sea region plays an essential role in European and global security, international trade, energy, critical raw materials, and food security (especially cereals). With a population of nearly 164 million, the countries around the Black Sea (excluding Russia) generate a GDP of around €2 trillion, according to estimates by the Brussels-based forum.
