European Agenda | Mihai Tudose asks the European Commission to take into account the opinion of EU citizens on regional development policy

„The latest Eurobarometer survey shows that EU citizens have a positive perception of the impact of EU regional policy.” • „Half of the citizens consulted call for European cohesion policy to focus particularly on areas with high unemployment (63%), disadvantaged urban areas (51%) and remote rural or mountainous regions (50%),” pointed out MEP Mihai Tudose.

EU citizens’ views on the effectiveness of European regional policy are largely positive, according to a recently published Eurobarometer survey. At EU level, 79% of those surveyed believe that cohesion projects have a positive impact on living conditions in their regions.

In Romania, the percentage is even higher: 92% of respondents believe that EU support has had a positive impact on the development of their community.

„The latest Eurobarometer survey shows that EU citizens have a positive perception of the impact of EU regional policy. At the same time, the survey highlights the areas that European citizens consider to be priorities: they are particularly calling for improvements in health and education infrastructure, job creation, improved energy efficiency and access to housing, as well as improvements in transport infrastructure and defense capabilities.

Half of the citizens consulted call for European cohesion policy to focus particularly on areas with high unemployment (63%), disadvantaged urban areas (51%) and remote rural or mountainous regions (50%),” said MEP Mihai Tudose.

„How does the European Commission intend to translate the views of European citizens into its actions on regional cohesion?” reads the question sent to the European Commission by Mihai Tudose.

The president of the PSD National Council said that, at the beginning of July, 14 EU governments, including Romania’s, sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, arguing that, in terms of funds allocated to regional development, „a separate and robust budget, accompanied by a region-based allocation methodology” should be maintained.
