Mihai Tudose threatens PSD’s exit from government: „There are limits to everything. The fuse, however long it is, burns, turns to powder, and explodes.”

Mihai Tudose, president of the PSD National Council and MEP, appeared on the show „Punctul Culminant” hosted by Victor Ciutacu on România TV, where he made revelations from within the governing coalition, showing how tense the relationship between the PSD and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan can sometimes be.

Mihai Tudose threatens to withdraw the PSD from the government

Following Wednesday’s governing coalition meeting, Mihai Tudose criticised Ilie Bolojan for disagreeing with the extension of the cap, a measure agreed upon by the PSD, UDMR and even the USR. „Mr. Bolojan would not agree to extend the cap, but instead, he stated that he would analyze for a few weeks whether or not it is good to maintain this cap. Now you are analyzing? But when you and your people decided to give up this measure, didn’t you analyze it? That’s what you should have done at that moment, that’s the natural flow.

The PSD, UDMR, and USR came and said it wasn’t good. Even the USR said, let’s see, maybe it’s not good. You come and say it’s good, tell me what you’re basing that on. We’ll analyze it, that it’s too late, nothing is too late, that tomorrow you’re having a government meeting and you’ve closed it,” Mihai Tudose said.

Ilie Bolojan’s reasoning, explains the former prime minister, would be to bring more money into the state budget, but the alternative is considered equally weak. Limiting the commercial markup to 50% would lead to record profits for those who sell food, which is unacceptable.

„Some advise him that it is good to raise prices and the state takes more from VAT. But consumption decreases, you block the economy. The calculation that you collect more from 1000 kilos, you no longer collect anything. These are simulations, some materials are made. With a markup capped at 50%, there aren’t many businesses with 50% profits, some are happy with 5-10%.

I’ll give you his statement, it’s public. He needs a week or two to do a case study, an analysis. I understand, but you didn’t do a study? Because if you had and I said it wasn’t good, you would have hit me over the head with it. It was agreed that he would analyze it,” Mihai Tudose added.

In the end, Mihai Tudose even threatened that the PSD would leave the government. He compared the party’s patience to a burning fuse.

„There are limits to everything. The fuse, no matter how long it is, burns, reaches the powder, and explodes. The limit has not yet been reached, because we still care about stability and want to be part of the solution, not the problem,” the former prime minister concluded.
