„In this intense Euro-debate, I have a simple question: don’t you want to take down the drones that are still coming at us, with what we currently have at our disposal, and urgently deal with our own production of drones and anti-drone systems?” pointed out Mihai Tudose, vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense.
PSD MEP Mihai Tudose, vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense, believes that the EU must take concrete action, moving beyond statements condemning hybrid warfare and expressing solidarity with the states targeted by drone incursions.
„We have been noticing for some time now – in Bucharest, Brussels and other European capitals – that our airspace is being violated by drones. Experts always point out that this is a hybrid warfare tactic, and EU leaders repeat in unison that a firm European response is needed.
At the EU summit in Copenhagen, the President of the European Commission expressed Europe’s solidarity with the countries targeted so far: Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Denmark.
In recent days, the European Commission has also proposed another roadmap for defense preparedness, with four new projects: the European Drone Wall, Eastern Flank Surveillance, the Air Defense Shield, and the Space Defense Shield.
The most discussed idea is that of an anti-drone wall on the eastern border of the Union, which the Baltic and Scandinavian countries strongly support, but which the governments of the four largest economies in the EU are reluctant to accept. Neither the effectiveness – with critics talking about the risk of a new Maginot Line – nor the time it would take to build the wall are clear at this stage, with estimates ranging from months to several years.
In short, in the EU, we are still seeking a balance between national and European defense logic, between deterrence and non-escalation.
In this intense Euro-debate, I have a simple question: don’t you want us to take down the drones that are still coming at us with what we currently have at our disposal and urgently start producing our own drones and anti-drone systems?” said Mihai Tudose.
The president of the PSD National Council stressed that, before launching new plans, the EU’s priority must be to define projects on military capabilities within SAFE – the financial instrument for action on European security – for which the EU is making over €16 billion available to Romania.
„Anti-drone projects can also be included, considering the possible model of the Atlas system, which is being developed by the Ukrainians and combines detection, jamming, and interception components. You can’t shoot down a drone with a roadmap. Let’s get down to business, with a focus on locating production capacities in Romania,” requested PSD MEP Mihai Tudose.
