The the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) will reimburse medical services provided by mobile screening caravans organised by private medical units, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete said on Wednesday.
The minister made the statement within the conference called „How to find the nearest centre for a free mammogram?” organised by the Federation of Cancer Patients Associations.
„In the reform package, the second package, which has been adopted and was one of the few – if not the only – the package declared constitutional by the CCR [Constitutional Court of Romania] and which we expect to be published in the Official Journal soon, likely next week, there is an article included regarding mobile caravans, through which the National Health Insurance House will reimburse medical services provided by mobile caravans – both for public units in partnership with associations, NGOs and so on, as well as for private units wishing to carry out screening activities. We have examples where many units, many hospitals, well-known private healthcare providers have already organised mobile screening caravans in remote areas,” Rogobete added.
The minister underscored that it is only natural for the state, through the Ministry of Health and the CNAS, to support such initiatives, which represent a fair and transparent partnership with both non-governmental organisations and the private healthcare sector.
Rogobete also mentioned that, in the past, Romania missed the opportunity to use non-reimbursable EU funds because of a poor administrative management.
„In recent years, we have lost millions of euros in non-reimbursable European funds because we had all sorts of programmes – programmes with dozens of objectives and activities – which could not be implemented. These were, of course, drafted by people acting in good faith, but with no connection to the system and no understanding of how the healthcare system works, and as a result, many of them could not be implemented and the European Commission did not reimburse the amounts for those activities,” the minister explained.
