Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Sunday evening, during an interview with Digi 24, that his relationship with President Nicusor Dan is a „a professional and institutional one”, noting that cooperation between the two has been „good” so far.
„We also have a personal relationship, in the sense that we respect each other and, whenever possible, we have a dialogue. But our discussions have always been about matters concerning our country, governance and public policies both domestic ones we support and our positions externally. Whenever I have been asked, I have answered as honestly and correctly as possible: it is an institutional working relationship. We collaborate on all the issues on which the two institutions must work together, both directly and through colleagues working in the Presidential Administration or the Government our teams cooperate daily,” Bolojan said.
The prime minister noted that it is „impossible” for two people to have identical views on every matter, which is why the principled approach is what matters.
„It is impossible for two people to have identical views on every issue. So the differences are not the problem, but the overall approach doing what is right for our country, and I believe we both respect that. (…) I have worked well with the President so far, and these are premises I seek to uphold because, as I have said, if we want to achieve the best results for our country, a proper institutional relationship between the President of Romania whoever that may be and the Prime Minister of Romania whoever that may be is essential. Certain aspects of representation overlap fully or partially, and if, for example, there is a European Council meeting on competitiveness, energy or decarbonisation, the President of Romania takes part, but implementing those decisions is the responsibility of the Romanian Government through the Ministry of Energy or the Ministry of the Environment. Therefore, institutional cooperation is necessary; otherwise, we do not represent our country properly and fail to make the most of the opportunities that arise,” Prime Minister Bolojan stated.
