The Republic of Moldova intends to equip itself with an anti-aircraft defense system against the background of the conflict in Ukraine

The authorities in Chisinau are currently working on amending the national legislation, so that it allows multi-year acquisitions in the area of defense so that, later, the Republic of Moldova can acquire an anti-aircraft defense system, the Moldovan Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatîi, told IPN on Tuesday, according to Agerpres.

Equipping the republic with a high-performance anti-aircraft system appeared as an emergency on Chisinau’s agenda after the recent overflight of the republic’s airspace by three Russian cruise missiles en route to targets in Ukraine.

The Minister of Defense says that in the draft state budget for 2023 the budget for national defense has been increased, but even so, the Republic of Moldova cannot afford an anti-aircraft defense system.

‘It is a very complicated and expensive system. It is a long-term purchase. In this sense, we are working on harmonizing the legislation on multi-year procurements. Previously, all purchases were made in the short term and in a very small volume. There was no question of missiles or planes. In this sense, without assistance from foreign partners, it will be difficult for us to obtain this capability’, stressed Nosatîi.

At the beginning of October, the head of defense from Germany, Christine Lambrecht, announced that her country will provide the Republic of Moldova with military drones and other equipment necessary for the Moldovan national army.
