Romania reports 49 cases of West Nile virus infection since June 2025; 3 deaths

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) announced that between the beginning of the reporting period, June 2 and October 30, a number of 49 cases of West Nile virus infection were reported in Romania.

Of these, 41 are confirmed cases and eight are considered probable. According to the INSP, in the same period, there has been three deaths caused by West Nile virus infection.

The cases were recorded in Bucharest (16), the counties of Alba (1), Braila (5), Cluj (2), Dolj (1), Dambovita (1), Galati (6), Ilfov (4), Iasi (2), Prahova (1), Sibiu (1), Salaj (1), Timis (3), Teleorman (1), Tulcea (1), Valcea (1) and Vrancea (1).

The infections involved: 22 individuals aged 70-79, 10 aged 60-69, eights aged 50-59, two aged 40-49, four person aged over 80, two person from the 30-39 age group and one from the 10-19 age group.

In this context, the INSP specialists have issued several recommendations for the public:

* Avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long trousers;

* Use chemical mosquito repellants;

* Prevent mosquitoes from entering homes by installing protective window screens;

* Ensure stagnant water pools around the household are drained;

* Remove containers with standing water and household waste from the property. AGERPRES
