UDMR’s Csoma: We agree with downsizing Parliament, but not to 300 seats

Leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies Csoma Botond said on Wednesday that he agrees with downsizing Parliament, but not to 300 seats, because in such version a part of the Hungarians in Romania would remain unrepresented in the Legislature.

„I don’t know what was actually discussed last night in the coalition. Contradictory information appeared in the press: some said that there was an agreement on cutting the MP seats, others said that there was no agreement. That is why I would not like to make any personal statement. We agree with cutting the number of MP seats, but there must still be representation. There is a community of over a million Hungarians in this country, and we cannot agree that counties such as Maramures, Salaj and Cluj should remain without representation in a Parliament of 300 members. We must bear in mind that there is a large Hungarian community – of over a million people – and we cannot accept that more than a third of this community is left without parliamentary representation. That is why I said that we do not agree with the 300 option,” Csoma said at the House of Parliament.

On Monday, the leader of the Save Romania Union (USR) senators, Stefan Palarie, said that the USR project on downsizing Parliament to 300 seat, initiated after a 2009 referendum, will be tacitly adopted by the Senate and will reach the Chamber of Deputies, where it will be forgotten, adding that failure to respect the will of the citizens will lead to extremism.
