Tănăsescu (CCR): Constitution, most important instrument to combat totalitarian or extremist tendencies

The Romanian Constitution is a powerful incentive in favor of tolerance and pluralism, as well as the most important instrument to combat totalitarian or extremist tendencies, the President of the Romanian Constitutional Court, Simina Tanasescu, said on Monday.

The statement comes in the context of the celebration of Romanian Constitution Day, celebrated every year on December 8.

„Proclaimed by Law 120/1995, this date is not a simple day on the calendar, but a landmark for civic consciousness, a moment that allows us all to reaffirm the profound meaning of our constitutional covenant. When it came into force, following the referendum organized on December 8, 1991, the Romanian Constitution represented, to a large extent, an aspirational document, a promise made to every citizen that the democratic transition would be achieved with dignity and responsibility. Based on values ??and general principles of a profoundly democratic nature, the Romanian Constitution was intended to be the expression of the political maturity of the state and the solidarity of the members that make up Romanian society. To this end, it guarantees fundamental rights and regulates public institutions whose operation has as its ultimate purpose the protection of citizens,” said Simina Tanasescu, quoted in a press release from the CCR sent to AGERPRES.

According to her, in the 34 years that have passed since that moment, the Constitution has proven to be the measure of what we are and the projection of what we want to become, „a living document” that has stimulated, with calm rigor, the progress of state authorities and the prosperity of citizens.

„The Romanian Constitution has managed to be equally a pact concluded by all citizens for peaceful coexistence, a common commitment to establish and respect the necessary limits so that power remains permanently at the service of the citizen, an invincible guard for fundamental human rights and freedoms,” the CCR president emphasized, adding that the application of the Constitution, every day, brings us all closer to achieving the aspirations envisioned on December 8, 1991.

„At the same time, the Romanian Constitution is an anchor for belonging to Euro-Atlantic values and for democratic resilience, a powerful incentive in favor of tolerance and pluralism, as well as the most important instrument for combating totalitarian or extremist tendencies,” Tanasescu specified.

Simina Tanasescu mentions that, in the context of the CCR’s exercise of the Presidency of the Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts, the Romanian Constitution also ensures the connection with the Francophone legal space, in which the culture of dialogue and respect for human rights are combined in a community based on language and democratic traditions.

„The message I address to everyone on this occasion is one of trust, responsibility and hope. The Constitution is not a distant text, but a living contract, which permanently requires good faith, involvement and devotion. It is a pact of trust – between citizens and institutions, between the present and the future, between individual freedom and the common good. On this day dedicated to the Romanian Constitution, I express my confidence that we will continue to cultivate together the values that define us and to strengthen the institutions that guarantee our democracy and fundamental freedoms,” added the President of the CCR.AGERPRES
