President Dan in Brussels from Wednesday to Friday; to attend EU-Western Balkans Summit and European Council

Published on

President Nicusor Dan will be in Brussels from Wednesday to Friday, where he will attend the EU-Western Balkans Summit and the European Council meeting, the Presidential Administration announced.

The meeting of EU leaders and their Western Balkan counterparts, chaired by President Antonio Costa, will provide an opportunity to demonstrate and reconfirm the strength of the EU-Western Balkans strategic relationship and the benefits it brings to citizens, according to the European Council’s website.

The Summit will highlight the importance of the political and economic relationship between the EU and its Western Balkan partners, particularly in the current geopolitical context, and the need for even stronger ties.

The EU will reaffirm its full and unequivocal commitment to the European Union membership perspective of the Western Balkans, as well as the progress achieved in the enlargement process, reflected in the latest report of the Commission, the quoted source mentioned.

On Thursday and Friday, the EU leaders will hold strategic discussions on Ukraine, the next Multiannual Financial Framework, enlargement and the EU’s geo-economic situation. The Middle East, European defence and migration will also feature on the European Council’s agenda.

The leaders will discuss the latest developments in Ukraine and issues that require urgent EU action. At the latest European Council meeting, held on 23 October 2025, the leaders committed to address Ukraine’s pressing financial needs for 2026 and 2027, including for military and defence efforts. They will decide how to implement that commitment and will also discuss robust and credible security guarantees for Ukraine, as well as diplomatic efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, according to the quoted source.

The meeting will assess the best ways to strengthen Ukraine’s negotiating position, increase pressure on Russia and continue defending Europe’s interests.

„Since the start of Russia’s war, the EU has stood firmly in solidarity with Ukraine and its people. To date, the EU and its member states have provided 187.3 billion euro in support of Ukraine, including 66 billion euro in military support,” the European Council said.

Within the meeting, the leaders will review progress on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU’s long-term budget, since the Commission put forward its proposals on 16 July 2025 and up to the present. AGERPRES
