German ambassador: Romania has proven to be a reliable European partner and transatlantic ally

Published on

Romania has proved to be a European partner and a reliable transatlantic ally amid Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the German ambassador in Bucharest, Peer Gebauer, said on Friday ahead of the Munich Leaders Meeting scheduled to take place in Bucharest, according to Agerpres.

„Whether it’s about developing a European response to Russian aggression, receiving people from Ukraine seeking protection or supporting the export of Ukrainian grain, Romania has been and continues to be reliable. This is especially true when it comes to security policy: Romania is extremely important for hosting international troops and for securing the south-eastern flank of our NATO territory. I am glad that this important role of Romania, as well as the increased importance of the Black Sea region, are increasingly recognised on the international stages. That is also highlighted by the fact that, in the coming days, Romania will host a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, as well as the Munich Leaders Meeting, a high-level event of the Munich Security Conference,” Gebauer is quoted as saying in a press statement released by the embassy.

At the Munich Leaders Meeting, some 75 senior government officials and foreign and security policy experts are expected to discuss the consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and other security issues in the region.

Among the participants from Germany will be the federal minister for special tasks and the head of the Federal Chancellery, Wolfgang Schmidt. From Romania, there will be President Klaus Werner Iohannis, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca and Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu.

Following the meeting, a Munich Security Brief will be published that includes the main points of interest and recommendations of the conference.

The Munich Leaders Meeting is a venue for exchanging views on current foreign policy and security challenges, with special emphasis on a specific regional context. It is held up to twice a year in different capitals around the world.

It is said to facilitate an open and interactive exchange between high-level decision-makers and experts from around the world.
