The most conservative wing of the Republican Party in the USA blocked again the election of the Republican Kevin McCarthy as the president of the House of Representatives, and it cannot start its activity until a president is elected, EFE agency reports, Agerpres reads.
Although the former president Donald Trump had earlier urged his own supporters among the Republican congressmen to still vote for McCarthy in order to overcome the deadlock, the latter did not obtain even in the fourth round of voting – after the three held on Tuesday – the majority of 218 votes. After the midterm elections, Republicans won a fragile majority in the House of Representatives, but about 20 Trump loyal congressmen refused to vote for McCarthy, accusing him of not being conservative enough and that his centrist political approach would approach President Joe Biden’s progressive Democrats. As long as the president of the Chamber is not elected, its activity is blocked and the congressmen cannot take the oath, an unprecedented situation in the last century. Voting rounds will continue until a president is elected.
