China describes situation in Taiwan Strait in 2022 as „serious” and „complex”

China has described the situation in the Taiwan Strait during 2022 as „serious” and „complex” and said Beijing has „taken the initiative” to „unite compatriots” on both sides of the strait. the CCTV state station reported on Wednesday, quoted by EFE and Agerpres.

The visit to Taiwan in August 2022 by then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi angered the Chinese government, which responded with economic sanctions and military maneuvers in the waters around Taiwan, moves described by Taipei as „a blockade” and which led to tensions in the straits at unprecedented levels in recent decades.

„We have taken a series of vigorous measures to suppress any form of provocation,” Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the State Council’s (Chinese executive) Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday, adding that „activities separatists” and the „mixture of foreign forces” put „the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation in grave danger”.

„In the new year, the strategy to solve the Taiwan issue will be to adhere to the principle of peaceful reunification,” explained Ma, who indicated that „Taiwan’s strategy of relying on foreign countries to achieve independence” is doomed to failure”, after the number of visits to the island by legislators and political representatives from numerous states increased in 2022.

The Chinese spokesman called for the „exploration of new ways to integrate” the areas located in the Taiwan Strait and „support” for the island’s businessmen to „adhere to a new development model”, adding at the same time that the majority of the Taiwanese population „want peace, stability and development”.
