National Culture Day | Remarks by Moldova’s Maia Sandu & Gavrilita

The National Culture Day, when the birthday of the great poet Mihai Eminescu is also celebrated, is an appropriate occasion to express our admiration, respect and gratitude for the creators and thinkers of our country, according to President of Moldova Maia Sandu, Agerpres reports.

In a message on the National Culture Day marked on January 15 in Romania and Moldova, Sandu mentioned that the work and talent of those who, despite a year of great turbulence, crises, maximum tensions and uncertainties caused by the war near us, did not abandon their vocation, projects and country.

In her remarks, Prime Minister Gavrilita emphasised that the National Culture Day is a special occasion for the coalescence of the entire society around the cultural, spiritual and intellectual values of the nation.

„Regardless of whether we live inside or outside the borders of the Republic of Moldova, culture is the binder that unites destiny with destiny and defines us as a nation. From one hemisphere of the world to the other, when joyful or sad, our citizens sing of joy ‘Galbena gutuie’ (Yellow Quince) by Adrian Paunescu, listen to the famous song ‘Dulcea si tandra mea fiara’ (My Sweet and Tender Beast) by maestro Eugen Doga, recites Grigore Vieru and Dumitru Matcovschi’s poetry, read ‘Ispravile lui Guguta’ (Guguta’s Adventures) by Spiridon Vangheli, admire the paintings of Igor Vieru, Mihail Grecu and Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu, and feel proud of the talent of Mihai Volontir and all the culture makers who have made us famous around the world,” reads Gavrilita’s message released by the Moldovan Government.

„Culture starts at home, from the heart of the family. It hides in gestures and words, in the way we mark holidays, in our style of singing. Culture is reflected in the blouses sewn with care by our grandmothers, the traditional sheepskin hats and opanaks.”

Gavrilita also expressed her gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to culture: writers, artists, actors, librarians, booksellers, teachers and managers of cultural institutions.
