The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, had a telephone conversation with the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares Bueno, according to the Foreign Ministry (MAE), Agerpres reports.
Minister Aurescu addressed with priority the subject of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, in which context he thanked Spain for its firm and constant support for this objective and expressed confidence in the continuation of vocal support from this country for the successful completion of this file.
The MAE informs that the Spanish minister of Foreign Affairs has reiterated his country’s active support for Romania’s accession to the free movement area, expressing the hope of achieving progress as quickly as possible in this file, as well as his willingness to support our country’s efforts towards a constructive solution that allows the completion of the process.
The two ministers also focused on the implementation of the decisions regarding the priority aspects of the bilateral agenda, agreed during the talks held at the first joint meeting of the Governments of Romania and the Kingdom of Spain which took place on November 23, 2022, at Castellón de la Plana.
In addition to bilateral and European cooperation, the discussions also focused on security coordination.
Minister Bogdan Aurescu highlighted the close cooperation in the field of security and within NATO and expressed special appreciation for the Spanish participation in the air policing missions (October 2022 – March 2023) to protect Romania’s airspace. Moreover, the two ministers agreed to strengthen coordination in more extensive formats on security issues, considering the common concerns for ensuring the security of the European continent in the current context with numerous challenges.
The two officials specifically discussed the start of negotiations for the bilateral agreement on dual citizenship.
