Greta Thunberg, after being released by the police: Climate protection is not a crime

Climate protection is not a crime”, Greta Thunberg wrote on Twitter after being released by German police. The environmental activist was detained by the police on Tuesday, during a protest against the expansion of a coal mine, according to Reuters, Agerpres reads.

„Yesterday I was part of a group that peacefully protested the expansion of a coal mine in Germany. We were kettled by police and then detained but were let go later that evening. Climate protection is not a crime”, Greta Thunberg wrote on Twitter.

Greta Thunberg was detained on Tuesday along with other environmental activists who were demonstrating against the demolition of the German hamlet of Luetzerath to make way for the expansion of a coal mine owned by the German group RWE.

Held by one arm, Greta Thunberg was led by three police officers some distance from the edge of the mine where she had earlier sat with her group, then escorted back to the police vans. She was released later that evening.

The Swedish activist described the mine expansion as a betrayal of present and future generations and accused Germany of being one of the world’s biggest polluters.
