Message sent by Greta Thunberg after the World Economic Forum

Published on

Greta Thunberg and about 30 other activists faced negative temperatures on Friday in a protest action for climate justice held on the last day of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Reuters reports, Agerpres reads.

The protesters chanted „What do we want? Climate justice. When do we want it? Now”, as well as ‘Fossil fuels must go”, while Thunberg held a sign reading ”Leave it in the ground!” Thunberg, who was detained by police in Germany earlier this week during a protest action against the expansion of a coal mine, arrived in Davos on Thursday where she participated in a discussion to which the executive director of the International Energy Agency was also invited (IEA).

While the director of the IEA, Fatih Birol, whose agency makes policy recommendations in the energy field, insisted that the transition to net zero must include a mix of responsible, Thunberg maintained her firm position against all new developments in the field of oil, gas and coal.

During the demonstration that took place in Davos on Friday, Thunberg and the other activists carried a sign with „a cease and desist order” addressed to the directors of the oil and gas companies.

The oil and gas industry, which has been accused by campaigners of hijacking climate change debates in the Swiss ski resort, has argued that it too must be part of the energy transition as fossil fuels will continue to play a role major in the energy mix as humanity makes the transition to an economy with fewer carbon dioxide emissions.

In 2019, Thunberg, who was 16 years old at the time, took part in the main meeting of the WEF, when she delivered to world leaders the warning that has become famous: „Our house is burning!”. The young activist returned to Davos the following year.
