Afghanistan aims to vaccinate 5.3 million children against polio

Published on

Afghanistan launched a vaccination campaign on Monday in which it aims to inoculate 5.3 million children under the age of 5 against polio, DPA reports, Agerpres reads.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Health, the campaign will cover 16 of the country’s 34 provinces and will last 3 days.

Last year, two cases of polio with a wild virus were detected in Afghanistan, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

Before taking power in August 2021, the Taliban banned door-to-door vaccination in areas they controlled.

However, the United Nations successfully negotiated with the Taliban the resumption of the vaccination program throughout the Afghan territory.
