French Government adopts pension reform despite protests

Published on

The French Government adopted the pension reform on Monday, despite protests and union demands, AFP reports, Agerpres reads.

Trade unionists plan to step up their mobilization efforts against the central project of the administration led by President Emmanuel Macron, while the government has shown its determination not to give in to pressure, the agency writes.

The Council of Ministers recorded the categorical refusal of the labor minister, Olivier Dussopt, to give up the increase of the retirement age from 62 to 64 years, the most controversial of the reformist measures.

„Returning to this point would mean giving up restoring the balance of the system,” he declared.

All unions and most of the opposition are against raising the retirement age, which is not wanted, according to opinion polls, even by the majority of French citizens.

Last Thursday, 1-2 million protesters took to the streets against the reform. The next wave of demonstrations is announced on January 31.
