New parliamentary elections will be held in Bulgaria in the spring

The last attempt to form a new government in Sofia failed on Tuesday, which requires the organization of new elections in Bulgaria, in the spring, AFP reports, Agerpres reads.

Former Prime Minister Boiko Borisov failed to form a coalition, although his conservative party, GERB, came out on top in early parliamentary elections on October 2, the fourth since 2021 so far.

The attempts of other parties to ally to form a majority were not crowned with success either. „No solution to the political crisis could be found. We are therefore heading for new elections”, declared President Rumen Radev, after the socialists also gave up on compromise efforts.

The head of state is to announce in the coming days the dissolution of the parliament, before the organization of the elections, which will not be able to take place earlier than April 2, the Electoral Commission stated.

According to AFP, analysts anticipate that the result will be similar: no stable majority and the prospect of Bulgarians being called to the polls again in the fall.

With the exception of a few months from 2022, when Bulgaria had a reforming government led by Kiril Petkov, a former Harvard-educated businessman, several interim cabinets have succeeded each other in Sofia for two years, and the main draft laws are blocked.

AFP observes that in this context the European funds from the recovery plan after the coronavirus pandemic are hardly absorbed; the agency appreciates that Bulgaria’s transition to the euro in 2024 seems increasingly difficult to achieve.
