Denmark wants European plan to relocate of asylum seekers outside Europe

Published on

Denmark is suspending its plan to transfer asylum seekers on its own initiative outside Europe, possibly to Rwanda, in an attempt to find a common solution with the European Union to organize this transfer, Migration and Integration Minister Kaare Dybvad announced on Wednesday, according to AFP, Agerpres reads.

Proposed by the current social-democratic government, the plan provided for the relocation of reception centers outside the European Union.

The law, adopted in June 2021, provided for asylum seekers to be sent to a center in another country, which was not named, during the administration of the file, where they could have remained even when they had obtained the status of refugee.

Discussions are ongoing, especially with Kigali, but for the moment they have been suspended.

„We are not starting negotiations at the moment for the creation of a Danish reception center in Rwanda,” Dybvad explained in an interview for the daily Altinget.

„It is a new government. We are not giving up this ambition, but we have a different process,” he explained.

The program of the center-left and center-right government resulting from the legislative elections in November considers the creation of a reception center outside Europe „in cooperation with the EU or a certain number of countries”.
