Asociația Montană Carpați (AMC) launches the „Plastic doesn’t turn into water” (Plasticul apă nu se face) project for mountain communities with clean waters, from February to October 2023, as part of the „With Clean Waters” (Cu apele curate) program implemented with the support of Lidl Romania. The initiative aims to increase awareness of the impact of plastic pollution on water resources and to encourage the public to take measures to reduce water pollution, AMC announces in a press release.
The aim of the project is to protect and promote the clean water resources in Romania by educating the public, implementing projects and awareness campaigns, and involving local communities in the clean-up of rivers in mountainous areas (tributaries of the Olt, Jiu, and Ialomița rivers).
„By launching the ‘Plastic doesn’t turn into water’ project, we aim to draw attention to the fact that plastic is a serious threat to water quality and environmental health. We are pleased to have the support of Lidl Romania in this campaign and we are confident that together we can make a significant difference in protecting clean water resources,” said Oana Blîndu, President of the Carpathian Mountain Association.
The project will have 3 stages:
During March-April, the local communities in the mountain areas will be consulted to understand the reasons behind the pollution of the rivers with waste, and at least two solutions for reducing pollution will be established (such as placing more garbage cans, education and awareness campaigns, faster waste collection by sanitation companies), personalized for each community. The solutions will be presented to the authorities, and the Asociația Montană Carpați, together with its partners, will ensure that at least one of them is implemented.
During May to July, educational activities will be organized for local communities and authorities to increase awareness and responsibility (experiments with different types of waste, workshops for reusing plastic, film screenings and documentaries about nature and biodiversity, creation of educational materials) and personalized educational panels will be installed in areas with the greatest pollution problems.
During August-September, clean-up activities will be carried out with each community individually (collecting waste from rivers and surrounding areas).
For the Olt river and its tributaries, the Asociația Montană Carpați will collaborate with the friends from Poveștile Carpaților, who will coordinate all activities in the areas of Sâmbăta de Sus for the Sâmbăta River, Viștea de Sus for the Viștea River, and Voivodeni for the Breaza River.
For the Jiu river and its tributaries, the friends of the Asociația pentru Turism Mehedințiul de sub Munte will come to help and coordinate all activities in the Baia de Aramă and Padeș areas for the Motru river, and in Cerna Sat for the Cerna river.
For the Ialomita river and its tributaries, the Carpathian Mountain Association will coordinate the actions in the Moroeni area for the Ialomicioara stream and in Azuga and Sinaia for the Prahova river.
The organizations involved in the project:
Asociația Montană Carpați is a non-governmental organization established in 2008 with the aim of promoting the mountain heritage of our country, especially among young people and children. Among the objectives of the association are the protection and conservation of biodiversity, the promotion of ecological and sustainable tourism, and environmental education for the public.
Asociația Poveștile Carpaților is an organization founded in 2017 that believes in the value of Romania’s mountain heritage and supports the promotion of responsible mountain tourism. The goal of the association is to take the initiative in developing Romanian mountain tourism through projects that raise awareness of mountain heritage values, such as traditional mountain huts, mountain trails, and unique tourist attractions in Romania.
Asociaţia pentru Turism Mehedințiul de sub Munte is a social economy structure founded in 2015 with the aim of developing tourism in the mountainous area of Mehedinți county by promoting natural beauty, conserving protected natural areas, preserving local traditions, and increasing social cohesion through the involvement of young people in volunteering activities and creating a sustainable partnership with public authorities and other associations/foundations.
The project „Plastic doesn’t turn into water” (Plasticul apă nu se face) is part of the „With Clean Waters” (Cu Apele Curate) program implemented with the support of Lidl Romania. The program represents a call to action in combating and preventing plastic pollution of the Danube River and its tributaries, addressed to members of the communities and public authorities in the targeted localities.
