Romania’s negative natural growth extends into February 2023

The natural population change in Romania stayed negative in February 2023, at minus 8,872, with the number of deaths being 1.8 times higher than that of live births, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), write Agerpres.

In February 2023, 11,316 births were registered, down 2,565 from January 2023. The number of deaths recorded in February 2023 was 20,188 (10,352 men and 9,836 women), 4,048 deaths (2,311 men and 1,737 women) from January 2023.

The number of deaths of children under the age of 1 recorded in February 2023 was 79, down six on a monthly basis.

In February, 68.1% of the total number of deaths was recorded in people aged 70 or over (8,581 deaths, or 42.5%, among people aged 80 and over; 5,160 deaths, or 25.6 % in people aged 70-79) and 3,630 deaths or 18% in people aged 60-69. The fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (92 deaths), 20-29 years (70 deaths) and 5-19 years (63 deaths).

Most of the people who died in February 2023 died from circulatory system diseases (11,294 people, 55.9%); tumors (3,504 people, 17.4%); diseases of the respiratory system (2,002 people, 9.9%).

In February 2023, 5,099 marriages were registered, up 195 from January 2023. The number of divorces under final court decisions and according to Law 202/2010 was 1,925 in February 2023, up 1,268 from January 2023.

The number of deaths in February 2023 was down 9,317 from February 2022.

The number of children under the age of 1 who died was up one in February 2023 from February 2022.

Marriages in February 2023 exceeded by 28 marriages in February 2022. Divorces under final decisions and according to Law 202/2010 in February 2023 were 262 fewer than in February 2022.
