A Russian drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train travelling on the Kyiv–Warsaw route in the Volyn region, approximately two kilometres from Ukraine’s border with Poland. The incident occurred during a massive Russian air attack on Ukraine.
According to the state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia, railway traffic monitoring teams detected the threat in time and warned the train crew. This measure helped avert a possible tragedy. No passengers were injured.
In the same area, Russian forces also attacked near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing during the morning, one of the main links between Ukraine and Poland.
A petrol station was damaged, and several lorries caught fire on the Ukrainian side of the border.
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said that the crossing’s infrastructure had not been hit directly. However, operations were temporarily suspended during the air raid alert, and staff and travellers were evacuated to shelters.
According to the Polish authorities, no one was injured on the Polish side.
The Dorohusk crossing was temporarily closed overnight, but cross-border traffic later resumed and was proceeding normally.
The attacks near the border prompted the Polish authorities to activate protective measures. Alerts were issued in several areas near the border with Ukraine, and Polish fighter jets were deployed as a precaution.
The incident involving the Kyiv–Warsaw train and the attacks in the Yahodyn area took place amid a large-scale Russian air attack on Ukraine, which targeted several regions of the country.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks near the border with Poland and warned of the risk that such incidents pose to European security.
“This is Putin’s terror knocking directly at the door of the EU and NATO,” the Ukrainian official said, calling on Western allies to impose tougher sanctions on Russia.
