The chair of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), premier Marcel Ciolacu said on Tuesday it was „almost impossible” for his party, which is Romania’s largest, not to have a candidate for Romania’s Presidency.
Ciolacu was asked, at DC News, when the decision will be made whether PSD goes with its own candidate in the presidential election or will go with a joint candidate of the PSD-PNL coalition.
„I believe the discussion will take place, as we agreed in the coalition, after Sunday’s elections. We will have a coalition meeting and make a decision based on the results. For the first time, I assumed to make a decision based on the Romanians’ vote. Let’s see if Romanians agree with this political stability, if Romanians trust that in the future there will be a majority shaped around PSD and PNL (National Liberal Party, ed. n.). I think it was a common sense approach and a respect for Romanians. It is almost impossible for PSD, which is the largest party in Romania, not to have a candidate for the position of president,” Ciolacu said.
According to him, PSD will emerge „stronger” from the local election.
„It will have more presidents of the county councils, it will have more mayors, mayors of the county-seated city & town halls, it will somehow be legitimate for colleagues and presidents of organizations within the PSD to raise this claim, but I leave the discussion, as is correct, to have it. Let’s not make announcements in advance. Let’s have a discussion if we want to be fair partners. If we don’t want to be fair partners, then we’re going to hurry without waiting for the Romanians’ verdict, which I find the most important,” Marcel Ciolacu added.
He announced that a party congress will be organized in which the candidate for the presidential election will be nominated.
