AmCham chairman: Romania’s country project is incomplete without entry into Schengen

Romania’s country project of the last 30 years is incomplete without the entry into Schengen, said Ionut Simion, the chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham Romania), during a press conference on Thursday, according to Agerpres.

„In the 30 years or so of democracy in Romania, our country has had only one country project that it managed to truly follow: joining NATO and the European Union. This country project is incomplete without the integration in Schengen and, therefore, please take this into account. I want to congratulate both the Presidency, the Romanian Government and the Parliament for the sustained, constant and coherent efforts they have made in the last decade for Romania to reach this objective. US investors who are present in Romania have every interest that the goods that are produced in Romania reach their customers as quickly as possible, both from the European Union and from the rest of the world. Let’s not forget that, in a period full of of geopolitical uncertainties, but also of disruptions at the level of supply chains, what better way to ensure their successful overcoming, in the interest of all, than to ensure a free transport of goods within the European Union and not only,” Simion pointed out.

According to the president of AmCham, Romania wants to contribute to the development and economic growth of the European Union, as well as to the improvement of its security.

„Not later than Monday I came from Greece to the country and I want to tell you that it was surprising to see that at the border between Greece and Bulgaria and between Bulgaria and Romania, there were ten cars and I stayed for almost an hour in customs. The fact that I spent an hour in customs matters less. But there, in customs, between Bulgaria and Romania, there was a trailer truck that had to turn back from border control because it was missing certain papers… When we are talking about a conflict that can break out at any time and involve not only Romania and all NATO member countries and all the countries of the European Union, it is all the more important for this transfer of goods, services, equipment to be done in the fastest way possible. This is the reason why we, the members of the American Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of the American investors present in Romania and the European investors present in Romania and members of AmCham, strongly support that Romania deserves to be in Schengen,” Ionut Simion stated.

The Coalition for the Development of Romania (CDR) is organizing, on Thursday, a press conference with the theme of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area and the beneficial impact it will generate for the development of the internal market, including by creating additional advantages for the economies of all member states.
