AmCham: Investments in healthcare must be priority on any government’s agenda

American Chamber of Commerce in Romania – AmCham Romania advocates for increased investments in health, a need reaffirmed by the conclusions of the „Health as a long-term investment” report, which shows the main public policies necessary for streamlining the system, optimizing costs, as well as financing options for the health system, informs a press release sent Agerpres on Tuesday.

The report drawn up for AmCham Romania by IQVIA analyses the current situation of the health system’s financing, identifies areas for improvement, good practices and financing options that can reduce the gap recorded by Romania compared to the European average in terms of expenses for medical care, and to facilitate Romanian patients’ access to quality medical services and innovative treatments.

„We use this opportunity to reiterate our call for coherent and sustainable measures, for the use of available technology and funding to improve the system that Romanian patients need to rely on for their health, and even for their lives,” said Roberto Musneci, president of the AmCham working group dedicated to the health system.

The analysis identifies several types of measures that AmCham recommends to address the main problems and inefficiencies in the patient journey and can unlock critical factors in the healthcare field.

Thus, a first set of measures refers to cost-effective policies, including investments in prevention and screening, to reduce risk factors and the mortality rate from preventable and treatable causes, the stabilization of the dynamics of the workforce through programs to motivate young doctors to remain in Romania and to address the disparities between regions, focusing on results, by moving to payment models that reward the results of value-based medical assistance, contributing to improving patient adherence.

Another set of measures refers to the need to optimize costs, which according to the research can be achieved by developing outpatient services, by reinvesting the savings resulting from the loss of exclusivity and by reducing the access time to innovative therapies, the implementation of digital solutions in health, based on a clear vision of a calendar of priorities and a path established until 2025, as well as through programmes to support patients’ access to medical devices.
