Approximately 86,700 people, Romanian and foreign citizens, and over 17,900 means of transport crossed Romania’s external border on the second day of 2025, the Border Police informed on Friday.
According to a release sent to AGERPRES, on January 2, the border police officers at the external border of Romania – the border with Serbia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, as well as sea and air flights arriving from outside the Schengen area – carried checks for crossing the border, both incoming and outgoing, for approximately 86,700 people, Romanian and foreign citizens, and over 17,900 means of transport.
Starting from January 1, 2025, at the internal border of Romania, respectively at the border with Hungary and Bulgaria, the border control was eliminated, meaning that all persons can travel to or from other Schengen member states, with the exception of Cyprus and Ireland, without stopping at the control booths of the Border Police.
However, the Romanian Border Police can make random and unsystematic checks on the communication routes from the internal border or in various road junctions, within the limit of 30 kilometers from the border line in the interior, which represents the area of competence, together with colleagues from Police, Gendarmerie, Immigration or other structures in order to verify the identity and legal status of persons, but also to prevent and combat illegal acts.
In the last 24 hours, 14 foreign citizens who did not meet the conditions provided for by law were not allowed to enter the country and five Romanian citizens were banned from leaving for various legal reasons.
