Arrivals at Romania’s tourist accommodation establishments, up 0.8pct five months into 2025

Arrivals at Romania’s tourist accommodation establishments, including apartments and rooms for rent between January 1 and May 31, 2025, totalled 4.49 million people, up 0.8% year-over-year, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Friday.

Out of the total number of arrivals, the arrivals of Romanian tourists at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 80.8%, while the arrivals of foreign visitors accounted for 19.2%.

Overnight stays at tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent) in the first five months amounted to 8.74 million, up by 3.1% compared with the same period last year.

Of the total number of overnight stays, between January 1 and May 31, 2025, the overnight stays of Romanians at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 78.9%, while the overnight stays of foreign visitors accounted for 21.1%.

The average length of stay was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2.1 days for foreign tourists.

The net occupancy rate between January 1 and May 31, 2025 was 24.5% on total tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent), up by 0.3 percentage points year-over-year.

By counties, in the first five months of this year, the number of tourist arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent), recorded higher values in: Bucharest (777,800 people), Brasov (530,000 people) and Cluj (238,700 people), and the overnight stays of tourists recorded higher values in Bucharest (1.58 million people), and the counties of Brasov (989,500 people) and Valcea (459,800 people).

By country, most arrivals of foreign visitors to tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent), between January 1 and May 31, 2025 came from: Italy (87,400 people), Germany (77,800 people) and Israel (60,500 people).

In May 2025, as against 2024, arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent) increased by 3%, and overnight stays increased by 6.6%.

Arrivals in May 2025 totalled 1.12 million people, up 3% compared to May 2024.

Of the total number of arrivals in May 2025, the arrivals of Romanian visitors accounted for 78.6%, and the arrivals of foreign tourists 21.4%.

The overnight stays in May 2025 totalled 2.25 million, up 6.6% year-over-year.

Of the total number of May 2025 overnight stays, the overnight stays of Romanian tourists accounted for 78.1%, while the overnight stays of foreign tourists made up 21.9%.

The average length of stay in May 2025 was 2 days for Romanian tourists and 2.1 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate in May 2025 was 28.2% on total tourist accommodation establishments (including apartments and rooms for rent), up 1.2% over May 2024.
