AUR: Ruling coalition changes election calendar out of their fear of George Simion and AUR

Published on

The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) says that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL), making up the ruling coalition, have modified the dates for the presidential and parliamentary elections „out of their fear of George Simion and AUR.”

„PSD and PNL combined the local election and the European election for fear of AUR and George Simion. Their goal: AUR not to win seats in the European Parliament election. Now, after they changed the electoral calendar in February, they come and change the dates of the elections again, also out of fear of George Simion and AUR. Today’s coalition’s decision is not a surprise. It was easy to anticipate after the token consultations that [PSD’s national leader] Marcel Ciolacu made at the beginning of the week. They showed a weak prime minister, a prime minister who is not his own master, who, in reality, does not lead his own government and does not have any say in the coalition he is part of,” according to an AUR a press statement released on Thursday.

Ciolacu is quoted as having said in May 2023 that the local elections cannot be combined with the European election because that would not be constitutional, but he still did it.

„In February 2024, Marcel Ciolacu announced that PSD and PNL had decided that the presidential elections would be held in September 2024. This time he did not keep his word either. What we understand from this whole movement of the PSD and PNL is that Marcel Ciolacu was fooled into holding combined elections in June to save PNL, and now he has been fooled again to move the presidential election to November and December, so as to give [PNL national leader] General Ciuca a three-month respite to try to qualify for the second round,” according to AUR.
