Average monthly total revenues in each household in Romania in Q1 2025 reached RON 9,148 (+13.7% from the similar period of 2024), of which 83.8% was spent on expenses amounting to RON 7,667, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
According to official statistics, the Q1 2025 total average monthly income was RON 9,148 per household, giving RON 3,682 per person, up 6.8% per household and 7.5% per person from Q4 2024. As against Q1 2024, the average total monthly income per household increased by 13.7%, and those per person by 14.7%.
The total average monthly expenditure of the population in Q1 2025, in nominal terms, was RON 7,667 per household (RON 3,086 per person) and accounted for 83.8% of total income, up RON 390 per household from Q4 2024. As against Q1 2024, the total average monthly expenditure per household increased by 12%, and those per person increased by 13.1%.
The average Q1 2025 monthly cash income was RON 8,578 per household (RON 3,453 per person), up 7.8% from Q4 2024, and the in-kind income of RON 570 per month per household (RON 229), down 6.4% from Q4 2024.
Wages before taxes and other pay rights amounted to RON 6,257 per month per household and made up the most important source of total income (68.4% of total household income, up 2.4% from Q4 2024). To the formation of total household income, a significant contribution was made by both income from social benefits of RON1,874 per month per household (20.5% in Q1 2025 and 21% in Q$ 2024 of total household income) and in-kind income (6.2% in Q1 2025 and 7.1% in Q4 2024), consisting of the value of in-kind income (1.1% in Q1 2025 and 1.7% in Q4 2024) and of the RON value of agri-food and non-food products from own resources (5.1% in Q1 2025 and 5.4% in Q4 2024.
As for the residential segment, the total average monthly income per household in urban areas in Q1 2025 was RON10,469, 1.4 times higher than in rural areas, and RON 4,352 by person,1.5 times higher than in rural areas.
In terms of the composition of Q1 2025 total incomes in urban areas, the share of wages before tax and other salary rights in total incomes was 73.7%, 13.4% higher than in the countryside, while in rural areas the share of income from social benefits was 22%, 2.5% higher than in the urban area. The share of in-kind income was 10.2% in rural areas, 2.8 times higher than in urban areas.
The average monthly cash expenditure in Q1 2025 was RON 7,199 per household (RON 2,898 per person), up 5.7% from Q4 2024.
In Q1 2025, the primary destinations for household expenditure are consumption (monetary consumption expenditure and the equivalent of human consumption from own resources) of RON 4,610 per month per household (60.1%) and transfers to public and private administration and to social security budgets in the form of taxes, contributions, rates and taxes of RON 2,645 per household (34.5%). Expenses related to household production (production expenses and the equivalent value of fodder consumption from own resources) were in the first quarter of 2025 of RON 134 per household (1.7%).
Residence shows differences between the level of average monthly total expenses. In urban areas, the average monthly expenses per household were RON 8,690, 1.3 times higher than in rural areas. Thus, a person in the urban area spent, on average, RON 3,612 per month, 1.4 times more than a person in the countryside. In the urban area, the share of expenditures on rates and taxes , contributions and fees was 37.5% in the total expenditures, 7.5% higher than in the rural area, while in the rural area the share of the equivalent value of the consumption of agri-food and non-food products from own resources was 10.8% in the total expenditures, 3.6 times higher than in urban areas.
According to the standard classification of consumption expenditures (COICOP), agri-food products and non-alcoholic beverages worth RON 1,460 per household held a significant share in the total monthly average consumption expenditures of households (31.7%). They are followed by monthly expenditures for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels amounting to RON 799 per household, with a share in the total average monthly consumption expenditure of 17.3%, healthcare expenditure amounting to RON 326 per household, with a share of 7.1% in the total average monthly consumption expenditure and transport expenditure amounting to RON 325 per household, with a share of 7.0% in the total monthly average consumption expenditure.
The lowest level of average monthly expenditures of households was recorded in education expenditures, of only RON 36 per household (0.8% of total monthly average consumption expenditures).
