Average net pay in Romania stood at 3,933 lei in August, down 42 lei or 1.1%, on a monthly basis, with the highest net pay recorded was in information technology and computer service activities, at 9,395 lei, and the smallest in garment manufacturing, at 2,214 lei, according to data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Agerpres reads.

In the public sector, slight decreases in the average net pay were recorded in August on a monthly basis in public administration (-1.1%), healthcare and social work (-0.2%). In education, the average net pay increased slightly from the previous month (+0.6%).

In August 2022, the average gross pay was 6,348 lei, 57 lei (-0.9%) lower than in July 2022.

„During the year, there are fluctuations in wage income determined, mainly, by annual bonuses and holiday bonuses (December, March/April). These influence the increases or decreases depending on the period in which they are granted, leading in the end, to the fading of the fluctuations in the monthly pay at the level of the whole year. The evolution of the real pay depends both on fluctuations in the average net pay and the inflation rate.”

Y-o-Y, the average net pay in August 2022 increased by 12.8%.

Against consumer prices, the real pay index was 97.8% in August 2022 as against August 2021. The real salary index was 98.3% in August 2022 as against 2022, and against October 1990 it was 218.1%, 3.5 percentage points lower than the one recorded in July 2022.

In August 2022, most average net pay decreased from July 2022 as a result of benefits and perks being paid in the previous months – quarterly, half-yearly, annual bonuses or for special performances, in-kind and financial aid, amounts from the net profit and stocks and shares (including securities).

Decreases in the average net pay were determined by production failures, lower receipts as a function of contracts/projects or as a result of vacations when meal vouchers and other benefits are not granted.
