The current account of Romania’s balance of payments was running a deficit of 20.181 billion euros, in the period January – September 2022, compared to 12.640 billion euros in the same period of the previous year, informs the National Bank of Romania (BNR) in a press release, according to Agerpres.
The breakdown shows that the deficit on trade in goods has widened by 7.349 billion euros, the surplus on services increased by 2.141 billion euros higher, the balance of primary incomes recorded a deficit by 3.067 billion euros higher, and the balance of secondary incomes recorded a surplus by 734 million euros higher.
According to the BNR, the total external debt over January – September 2022 increased by 4.824 billion euros. By structure, the long-term external debt amounted to 94.131 billion euros on September 30, 2022 (66.6% of the total external debt), down 3.5% compared to December 31, 2021. The short-term external debt recorded on 30 September 2022 the level of 47.278 billion euros (33.4% of the total external debt), up by 21.1% compared to December 31, 2021.
The long-term external debt service ratio was 16.3% between January – September 2022, compared to 17% in 2021. The goods and services import cover was 4.2 months as of September 30, 2022, compared with 4.9 months on December 31, 2021.
The ratio of BNR’s foreign exchange reserves to the short-term external debt by remaining maturity on September 30, 2022 was 72.7%, compared to 79.4% on December 31, 2021.
