Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Monday that during his meeting with Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac, things were said “straightforwardly,” “without beating around the bush,” noting that, from the PNL’s perspective, a government that does not rely on explicit political support is not a solution for Romania.
Bolojan announced that the National Political Bureau will be convened on Wednesday or Thursday to make a decision regarding the party’s position.
‘I had a meeting with the prime minister-designate, Eugen Tomac, with whom I discussed matters directly regarding the formation of the new government. We presented our perspective, namely that a government not based on explicit political support is not a solution for Romania, as it would have virtually no ability to continue reforms and push through the difficult measures that our current reality demands—measures that Romania cannot avoid— without parliamentary support. A government that does not rely on explicit support cannot carry out the reforms that Romania needs,” stated the PNL leader.
He noted that he discussed “urgent” issues with Tomac, primarily the absorption of European funds, accessing grants from the PNRR, and the need to implement the reforms that Romania committed to in 2021 but has not yet carried out.
‘This mainly involves nine laws that must be adopted by the Romanian Parliament. We also discussed expediting the completion of projects so that we do not lose the grant funds, and to ensure that loan funds remain a significant portion, even if some projects cannot be completed due to the very large number and diverse situations across the country’s thousands of localities. We discussed issues related to other urgent problems, such as the budget deficit, reducing government spending, and effective governance, as well as matters concerning good governance and the proper functioning of the economy,” added Ilie Bolojan, according to Agerpres.
“It was a meeting where we spoke frankly, without beating around the bush. Today at 3:00 p.m., there will be meetings with our parliamentary groups. The colleagues representing the two groups—the President of the Senate and Mr. Andronache, the leader of the Chamber group—will brief the parliamentary groups on the content of the discussions, and in the middle of this week, on Wednesday or Thursday, we will convene the National Political Bureau to make a decision regarding the National Liberal Party’s position,” Bolojan stated.
Prime Minister-designate Eugen Tomac stated on Monday, following his meeting with PNL leaders, that he has high hopes the Liberals will grant him a vote of confidence in Parliament. ‘I leave this meeting feeling confident. Mr. Bolojan has initiated a series of important reforms; they must be continued, and I am prepared to carry on with great responsibility the path Romania is currently following,” Tomac added.
