The celebration of the Roma ethnicity represents, every time, an opportunity to reflect on their identity and discover their traditions, which enrich the culture, interim President Ilie Bolojan said on Tuesday.
He delivered a message on the occasion of the International Roma Day and the celebration of the Roma ethnicity in Romania.
„On the occasion of the International Roma Day and the celebration of the Roma ethnicity in Romania, I send my congratulations, wishes of health and prosperity to all Romanian citizens of Roma ethnicity. Today, we celebrate an ethnicity that has been deeply tested by history, which, despite its difficult path toward freedom and emancipation, has played an important role in achieving Romania’s national goals and in strengthening our country’s European journey,” underscored Bolojan in a message presented by State Advisor Catalina Galer during an event organised for this occasion in Bucharest.
According to Ilie Bolojan, the Roma ethnicity celebration represents, every time, an opportunity to reflect on their identity and discover their traditions, which enrich the culture.
„It is a good opportunity to recognize the Roma personalities who, through talent and creativity, have promoted a valuable and original heritage worldwide. At the same time, we honor the memory of the Roma who sacrificed themselves in the critical moments of history to fulfill the ideals of national unity and freedom, in the spirit of a fraternity that deserves to be honoured with the same devotion. The full integration of the Roma and the elimination of social and economic gaps are major goals for which we have the responsibility to mobilize our energies. In this way, we build together the Romania we want, a country where respecting values and supporting all communities ensures performance and well-being, a nation of unity in diversity, where every citizen matters,” the interim president’s message reads.
He emphasised that this Roma celebration is a suitable occasion to remind everyone that society develops only through constant and consistent dialogue between ethnicities and cultures, in an environment of stability and solidarity.
„We are going through a period with unprecedented challenges, which risk deepening distrust and divisions, proliferating extremist, racist and xenophobic speech and actions. We must respond to these manifestations by promoting knowledge, dialogue and tolerance. We will only succeed if we cultivate together, through education and civic involvement, pluralism, equality of opportunity for everyone to have a dignified life in a democratic and inclusive society,” Bolojan further conveyed.
