The PNL will no longer be part of a coalition with the PSD if a political crisis arises and it has to reconsider its decision, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Friday.
The head of the Executive was asked on Radio România Actualități whether he relies entirely on the support of his colleagues in the PNL and whether there will be liberal “factions” that wish to continue collaborating with the PSD in the current political context, in which the Social Democrats have voted to leave the government if the prime minister does not resign from office.
‘The National Liberal Party held a meeting on this issue, given that the PSD had made the announcement regarding this vote and so on; in effect, it has taken a stance. At present, the National Liberal Party’s position is that if a political crisis arises, the PNL will no longer be in a coalition with the PSD. Until another decision is made—whether this decision is reinforced or a different one is reached, one way or another—the matter is settled. This is the decision the PNL has made, and depending on the outcome of Monday’s vote—likely Monday evening or Tuesday morning—we will have a response on this issue,” stated Ilie Bolojan.
He noted that a situation has arisen that requires a decision from the PNL.
‘We tried to smooth things over, mindful of everyone’s sensitivities, trying to build trust, but we have reached a situation where inevitably the PNL will also have to reconfirm a decision,’ Bolojan stated.
On another note, he said that as long as he is president of the PNL, the party will remain a relevant one that supports Romania’s modernization values.
‘And I believe that only through governments that encourage work, respect private initiative, maintain discipline in public finances, and ensure order in the country can we make progress in the coming period,’ Bolojan noted.
