Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced on Thursday that he had confirmed, together with representatives of the European Commission, the budget deficit target of approximately 6% that Romania had proposed for this year and that our country would respect the commitments assumed to correct the deficit trajectory.
„I confirmed once again with the Commissioner for Economy that Romania will pursue a deficit target close to 6% this year, as we announced, and that we will respect the commitments we made to correct the deficit trajectory. I believe that, as we have noted in recent days, when Romania contracted loans with reduced interest rates compared to last year, this is the direction we must follow, in order to reduce our interest costs, maintain the absorption of European funds and put the relaxation measures into practice. These were the aspects related to the discussion with Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis,” declared Ilie Bolojan, at a press conference in Brussels, at the headquarters of the Permanent Representation of Romania to the European Union.
He also specified that the discussions also focused on the challenges related to this year’s budget, emphasizing that 2026 will be „a peak of investments”, mainly due to the European funds from the PNRR, which must be absorbed by the end of August.
„Here we have an important component, of approximately 10 billion euros, of which part is a grant – almost 50% – and part is a loan, which we must absorb. There will therefore be significant pressure to maintain both a large investment component, which will ensure the completion of these projects, as well as the continuation of work on other projects financed either from other axes on European funds or from national budgets. At the same time, having a large investment budget, it will very likely be over 7%, of which 3.6 – 3.7% represent projects through the PNRR,” Bolojan also said.
During his visit to Brussels, the Prime Minister met with the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Roxana Minzatu, Commissioner for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs and Training, and with Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification.
