Both parents of 9,758 children, working abroad end-December 2023

The total number of children in Romania with both parents working abroad stood at 9,758 at the end of December 2023, 2,211 fewer than at the end of the previous year, according to data centralized by the National Authority for the Protection of Children’s Rights and Adoption (ANPDCA).

The number of children with parents working abroad also decreased to 64,936 at the end of December 2023, from 72,627 at 31 December 2022.

Of the 9,758 children with both parents working abroad, 9,143 were in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree without protective measures, the rest being placed with a foster carer, residential services or other families or individuals.

According to the cited source, 46,792 children had a parent who had gone abroad to work, and of these 45,080 children were in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree, without protective measures. At the same time, 924 children were in the special protection system, such as in the care of a foster carer, in residential care or with other families/persons.

However, 8,386 children came from families where the sole parent was working abroad. Of these, 7,622 children remained at home in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree, without protective measures.

The total number of children remaining at home in the special protection system stood at 2,066 on 31 December 2023, of whom 352 children were in the care of a foster carer, 372 in residential care, 1,248 with relatives up to the fourth degree, and 94 children in the care of other families or persons.
