Bucharest to host ”Women, peace and security” events

Romania’s Defence Ministry (MApN) will organise, Tuesday to Thursday, a series of Romanian-American co-operation events themed „Women, peace and security”, according to Agerpres.

The events are organised on the sidelines of a visit to Romania by a delegation of the National Guard of the US state of Alabama led by Major General Sheryl Gordon, and are the result of a co-operation plan agreed upon in early 2022, according to MApN.

At the Carol I National University of Defence in Bucharest on Tuesday, a high-level conference on the implementation of the UN Women, Peace and Security Agenda, progress and ways of cooperation will take place, to be attended by the visiting US delegation, members of the Romanian Parliament, government, the Romanian Diplomatic Institute, the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Special Telecommunications Service, the University of Bucharest, the National School of Political and Administrative Studies, the Protection and Guard Service, as well as academics.

At the Henri Coanda Air Force Academy in Brasov on Wednesday and Thursday, a working group of experts will meet to debate the gender perspective in the armed forces, with the participation of specialists from the visiting US delegation, gender advisors from the educational institutions of the Air Force, trainers and teachers of the Air Force Academy.

During the two days, gender training sessions will be held with academy students on topics such as the integration of gender perspectives, leadership and gender perspectives, removing gender stereotypes, gender equality and equity.

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda offers firm support for the equal and non-discriminatory participation of women in leadership and the process of ensuring and promoting peace and security, according to MApN.

The UN Security Council adopted the resolution on women and peace and security on 31 October 2000. The resolution reaffirms the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peace-building, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction and stresses the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security.

Since 2000, complementary resolutions have been adopted on this subject, forming the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, demonstrating the fact that there is an increased and visible interest in this area at the UN level.
