Building permits for residential buildings in Romania, up 2.9pct in 2024

The number of building permits issued for residential buildings increased by 2.9% in 2024 from 2023, to 35,667, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Increases were recorded in the following development regions: Sud-Muntenia (+441 permits), Vest (+375), Bucharest-Ilfov (+206), Nord-Est (+99), Sud-Est (+20) and Nord-Vest (+10). Decreases were recorded in the development regions Centru (-112 ) and Sud Vest Oltenia (-18).

In December 2024, 2511 building permits were issued for residential buildings (-8.0% compared with November 2024), for a total usable area of 840,852 sqm (+25.3%). Of the total building permits for residential buildings, 71.3% are for rural areas. In December 2024, there was a decrease in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings on a monthly basis (-218 permits). The decrease is reflected in the following development regions: Sud-Est (-84 permits), Vest (-71), Nord-Vest (-62), Bucharest-Ilfov (-32), Sud-Muntenia (-22), Sud-Vest Oltenia (-6) and Centru (-3). An increase was recorded in the Nord-Est development region (+62 permits).

According to INS, in December 2024, 473 building permits were issued for non-residential buildings (-10.9% from November 2024), for a total usable area of 481,322 sqm (+77.0%). Compared with the previous month, in December 2024 there was an increase in the usable area of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+209,378 sqm). The growth is reflected in the following development regions: Centru (+112,832 sqm), Vest (+33,961), Nord-Est (+24,818), Nord-Vest (+21,305), Sud-Vest Oltenia (+19,924) and Sud-Est (+13562). Decreases were recorded in the development regions of Bucharest-Ilfov (-14,332 sqm) and Sud-Muntenia (-2,692).

Also, in December 2024 there was a decrease in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings (-1.5%) and an increase in the total usable area (+6.9%) compared to December 2023.

This decrease in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings (-39 permits) is reflected in the following development regions: Sud-Vest Oltenia (-77 permits), Nord-Vest (-52), Bucharest-Ilfov (-18) and Vest (-16). Increases were recorded in the following development regions: Centru (+60 permits), Sud-Muntenia (+50) and Sud-Est (+14). In the Nord-Est region, the same number of permits was issued as in December 2023.

Compared with December 2023, December 2024 saw an increase in both the number of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+1.7%) and the total usable area (+16.4%). The increase in the usable area of the building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+67,665 sqm) is reflected in the following development regions: Centru (+142,927 sqm), Vest (+46,984), Sud-Vest Oltenia (+21508) and Nord-Est (+15871). Decreases were recorded in the following development regions: Sud-Muntenia (-91,291sqm), Nord-Vest (-50,468), Sud-Est (-16,057) and Bucharest-Ilfov (-1,809).
