Bulgarian national investigated for trying to smuggle over 30,000 cigarettes into Romania

A 30-year-old Bulgarian national travelling from Bulgaria to Germany is now under criminal investigation for trying to import into Romania, via the Giurgiu border crossing, a total of 32,400 cigarettes hidden in an automobile’s doors, thresholds and dashboard.

„Today, at the Giurgiu Border Crossing, a 30-year-old Bulgarian citizen driving a car travelling on the Bulgaria-Germany route showed up for clearance Following the border control carried out on the vehicle, Giurgiu border guards discovered, hidden and undeclared, in specially arranged places, in the doors, thresholds and dashboard of the car, a total of 32,400 cigarettes, namely 1,620 packages of cigarettes, various brands, all stamped with the Bulgarian excise stamp,” reads a press release issued on Monday by the Giurgiu Border Police Inspectorate.

The entire quantity of cigarettes, estimated at RON 48,600, was seized by the police, and a criminal file was opened on the Bulgarian driver, who will be prosecuted.
