Burduja: Romgaz is considering taking over a large plant in Romania

The Romgaz National Natural Gas Corporation is working on an analysis for the takeover of the largest chemical plant in Romania, which would allow it to supply natural gas at a price that would pay for the production of chemical fertilisers, Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja said on Wednesday.

„Romgaz is working on an analysis for the takeover of a large plant in Romania, I will not go into other details, which would allow it to supply gas at a price that would be profitable for the production of chemical fertilisers and, basically, to expand its portfolio in this regard. but they have the political and national security mandate to take such steps,” said Burduja.

He added that industry is facing challenges throughout Europe, saying that that is what he voiced support for in Brussels and whenever he had the opportunity, that through shock therapy policies, a good part of Romania’s industry was wrecked and the country ended up depending on others.

„Which is also a security risk from my point of view, when you don’t have the capacity to produce, for example, chemical fertilisers for agriculture. And when we all know that this process of preserving, let’s say, a plant requires an investment of EUR 300-400 million to get it back on its feet. It is not wise to do so. And I think that Romania has two things to do, on the one hand, things that depend on itself, and on the other hand, things that depend on the European Union. We too must defend our positions in Brussels. What depends on us? It is up to us to massively increase our electricity and safe gas production capacity. From gas we have a clear plan, we are talking about Neptun Deep, we are talking about a production with at least 75%, but up to 100% higher than today, and we are also talking about an added value of this gas, either through gas thermal power plants, so to transform it into electricity, the Iernut projects, the famous epic that continues, and Mintia, Isalnita, Turceni and others, Navodari. On the other hand, let’s use it in industry – we have said it before – and the approach continues,” Burduja told ZF Power Summit 2025.
